French perfumer and luxury scented candle maker Diptyque celebrates the 50th anniversary of L’Eau, its first fragrance, with two new creations. ‘Tempo’ and ‘Fleur de Peau’ are nods both to the sixties and the first fragrance that inspired all the great Diptyque scents that followed.
During the 60’s, a certain scent was changing the world: patchouli. It conveyed a sense of freedom and spirituality that was closer to nature, and the hopes of a generation that was reinventing the future. ‘Tempo’, the newest Diptyque fragrance, is a tribute to this olfactory icon. But it’s not the regular patchouli fragrance, it’s a nuanced composition of three patchouli extracts from the indonesian island of Sulawesi, that hovers between elegant and woody, enveloping and earthy, elevated by violet leaf. Therefore Tempo is far from the harsh, humid undergrowth scent of yesterday’s touchstone. The new fragrance vibrates on the skin with remarkable sophistication. Its gentle and exceptionally fresh. Upon spraying, the spicy and woody aspects of patchouli are there, of course, but they smell soft and tender. This scent is definitely not what you would associate with a patchouli fragrance. Even more. Never would we buy a patchouli fragrance but when we were offered the choice between ‘Tempo’ and ‘Fleur de Peau’ we chose without hesitation the fresh patchouli. Did I make my point clear?
Did you know? Despite its woody scent, fragrant patchouli oil is not extracted from wood, like cedar or sandalwood, but instead from the leaves of an aromatic plant in Indonesia called “Nilam”.

In ancient Greec, one myth stood out as the most passionate and sensual: the love between Psyche and Eros, the beauty’s quest to meet with her lover and the happy outcome of their union which led to the birth of their daughter, Hedone… Only one scent can convey this legend as a fragrance, that of musks. Equally legendary, they have the unique ability to enhance the skin with their arousing carnal accents. They are at the very heart of Fleur de Peau, as cottony and light as they are soft and moist. Highlighted with the elegantly powdery iris and fruity, ambery ambrette seeds, they reveal their full tactile dimension. Did you know? Absolute ambrette seed extract comes from hibiscus flowers. Its notes are extraordinarily rich: sweet, slightly animal, fruity (like pear and plum).
Olfactory collection: floral
Raw materials: musk, iris, ambrettolide
