British artist Nick Gentry knows a thing or two about floppy disks. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term ‘floppy disks’: they’re those silly looking quadrangle casings with a little metal window on them that ones opened reveals a fragile looking soft plastic thingy with all your computer data on it. That said, if we could open all drawers in the world, surely billions of them would come out. That’s exactly what Nick Gentry must have had in mind when he started making his stunning recycled art creations. Nick is keen on recycling old media and re-using it as a central theme for his work that has been exhibited in galleries around the wolrd.
What’s even more fun about the art projects of Nick Gentry is that you can actively participate by donating your obsolete technology for art. As a social art project, your participation and contributions are therefore a vital part of the creative process because the history and rich variety of memories contained in your old objects forms the main subject of each piece. How to participate ? Fill a small box with your obsolete technology. Send it to the studio or the gallery of Nick Gentry. Chance is that your objects will be embedded into the art of Nick Gentry. Go and see the art in a show. For more details about how to participate in Nick Gentry’s art projects goto: www.nickgentry.com
