Imagine you have a leading position in a a multinational in the port of Antwerp but your passion is all about art and fashion. Martine De Meyer did what many of us dream of but don’t dare to do. In 2016 she launched her own fashion brand.
Inspired by ballet and contemporary dance the brand was named after the iconic Belgian ballerina Andrée Marlière. “I liked the feminine and masculine character of her name as well as the fact that it sounds soft and strong at the same time and has a Belgian and French character” De Meyer explains. “Moreover she was very artistic and loved to paint. As a teenager I also liked everything about art but my parents preferred another eduction for me. Five years ago I decided to follow an educatio at the Art Academy in Lier.”
Translating the elegance of its muse to modern design – while playfully referencing to artists such as Edgar Dégas, Maurice Béjart and Martha Graham – is a leitmotiv which makes Marlière stand out. “My favourite piece from the present collection is ‘Gropius’ a t-shirt inspired by the inventiveness of the Bauhaus movement. Pull the t-shirt inside out and you have a totally new piece.” Marlière centers on fusing graphical elements with strong and minimalistic design, while never losing track of the functionality of the clothing. The brand is dictated by functionality and comfort of movement. “My clothes have to be in function of the movements of the body.” In a pursuit to fuse elegance and comfort in one design, the quality of the fabrics was of uttermost importance. Hence the choice to work with some of the most lauded Japanese and Italian textile producers. A strong aesthetic is paired with humanist values. Every piece is completely produced in Portugeuse studios and sweatshop free.
“In its very essence, Marlière stands for honest production, high-quality materials, graphical elements and well-cut pieces that can endlessly be combined”, De Meyer explains. “I want my pieces to be timeless. Call them trending classics. Today I wear two pieces in mesh one above the other but you can also wear them separately.” Marlière is designed for a woman who is in motion (till D-cup), in other words, a creative and modern woman who dares to dream.
