It was in the Pavillon Cambon Capucines in Paris that we had the honour to talk to Elie Saab about his first perfume for women: ELIE SAAB Le Parfum. The odour is a faithful translation of the fashion house’s codes. “A fragrance which expresses a radiant femininity and which includes the duality of my world: the light of the Middle East and the modernity of the West.”, as Saab explained himself. Enveloping and subtle, l’eau de Parfum, created by Francis Kurkdjian, is an homage to the designer’s universe: “What I found fascinating in working for Elie Saab, was the idea of interpreting light; I didn’t have any specific images in mind, just sensations: the whiteness of the sun at its zenith, radiant femininity, a modern interpretation of voluptuousness” Kurkdjian explains. Composed as an ode to light, ELIE SAAB Le Parfum celebrates the splendor and the brilliance of radiant femininity with a floral solar woody theme. The permanent exchange between flowers and wood is what gives the fragrance such captivating resonance. The charismatic Elie Saab revealed to us in person that the perfume is again a dream that has came true but more importantly that men will be spoiled within the coming year with an own Elie Saab perfume and bathline.
Elie Saab was born in Beirut in 1964, into a family that had no ties with fashion; there was nothing to presage his extraordinary destiny, his incredible talent or his unflinching will. Right from the beginning, he dreamed only of escaping to fantastical faraway lands. He was not yet nine when he created his first dress for his younger sister. The rumor of his talent spread quickly; first his neighbours, and then the women of the city, then the elegant women of the region came knocking at this young autodidact’s door. The name Elie Saab soon became synonymous with dresses that were the essence of grace and femininity. At 18, Elie Saab opened his own Couture House with more then a dozen seamstresses. Sometimes he would receive orders for 20, 30, or even 60 dresses for a single ceremony! When Halle Berry accepted the award for Best Actress in a distinguished net and embroidery topped brown Elie Saab dress at the 74th Academy Awards in 2002 all of the sudden the whole world knew the designer. Nowadays, between 800 and 1000 dresses are made to measure, including the luxurious wedding dresses, yearly. Elie Saab is the personal designer to many princesses and vips and about every girl dreams of marrying in one of his royal wedding dresses. www.eliesaab.com
