Nice to know about denim, Giorgio Lironi, the Belgian denim specialist that worked for 20 years in denim from sales to design (ten years for Diesel, three years for Lee and three years for Replay) gives plenty advice. “If you have shorter legs, have a boot cut”, Lironi tells. This and much more. (see interview below)
What is the perfect fit? “I got this question asked a million times. Forget it! The perfect fit does not exist”, Giorgio Lironi tells. “You have to try them all. However a really good brand for the perfect fit is 7 For All Mankind. They are not cheap, at all, but they are really good. They are simple, not too much washing… Their basic model is not too high, not too low, just enough stretch to make it nice. Whether you have a small or big but, it will always fit. However never think a pair of jeans can make you look slim. A butlifting pair of women jeans can lift your bum but it never makes you look slim. Whatever people tell you, dont’ believe it!”
Where you buy the perfect jeans? “Don’t go to a department store”, Lironi tells. “Preferably don’t buy your jeans online unless you know perfectly what you need and what size you have. It is better to go to a specialist store. When you enter the store that person will look at you and give you two pair of jeans. At least one of the two should fit! If that is not the case, you better flee to the next denim store!”
What kind of jeans to buy? “Jeans are workwear”, Lironi tells. “That is why you best buy a sturdy one. Raw denim are much stronger and longlasting than a fancy one with for instance a lot of stretch in it. Denim are like food, the simpeler the better.”
How to wear your denim for to a glam evening out? “Accesorize, accesorize, accesorize, … combine your denim with a nice high heel, a nice piece of jewellery or a special belt”, Lironi tells. “Even man can wear denim to a gala. What I do? I take a clean black or grey jeans and combine it with a tuxedo jacket and tuxedo shoes, that’s it.”
Can you tell us a little bit more about denim history ? “The three big jeans company’s are Levi’s, Lee and Wrangler. Levis invented the jeans and according to the company its famous 501 model has never changed”, Lironi tells. “I think it changed a million times. It has been adapted to the morphology of the people that became taller, wider, whatever, … At the back they do not have rivets but in the front they have rivets to make the denim stronger. Some brands they do not use rivets like Wrangler for instance because originally they were made for rodea riders and they did not want the rivets to scratch the saddle. Levi’s invented the jeans but Lee made it better. They invented jeans especially made for women. They also invented the jeans jacket. The exactly same model is still in production. They also invented the zipper and the stone wash in the ’70ies. Wrangler is more a brand focused on rodeo riders. And then you have the designer jeans. Gloria Vanderbilt invented the designer jeans but marketing wise it was not very strong. The best example for me is Calvin Klein. In 1981 Calvin Klein took a 16 year old actress named Brooke Shields as a model for their Clavin Klein Jeans commercials and added the in the mean time famous quote “You wanna know what comes between me and my Clavin’s? Nothing.” The world was shocked and the brand was launched. Nowadays designer jeans are good but if you want to buy a real jeans I always advise people go to a real denim manufacturer: go to a Lee or Wrangler shop, to a G-Star, Diesel, Replay or whatever and if you find somewhere a Dolce & Gabbana jeans that fits you perfectly, buy it. Do not expect to find exactly the same model again next season! Companies specialised in jeans will keep there same models at least for a few seasons.”
