Okay, we definitely won’t be one of the 500 lucky ones worldwide being able to buy the brand new Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series sports car, but at least we had the chance to get behind the wheel of and and put the new limited edition Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series around our wrist. This time masterpiece in itself is the perfect consolation price for a car and watch aficionado like me. Oh no, I can’t buy it either.
What’s worse: having little money or having lots of money and still not be able to buy what you really want? Luxury companies don’t want to create frustrations – even if they sometimes do – they just want to do business in creating desire… the desire of having a talking piece your brother, colleague or neighbour doesn’t have; a special piece that will be a conversation starter at your next night out.
But how your highly exclusive car can be a conversation starter if it’s parked in the garage at the venue? And yes, it is not very polite or elegant to put your Porsche-key ostentatious at the dinner table. That’s why Porsche created the new custom-made Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series watch. A watch to watch. A watch to have. A watch to show… that you have something special parked in the garage worth talking about.
First in-house movement
The brand new custom-made Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series watch is a result of Porsches steadfast collaboration with Porsche Design (the lifestyle counterpart creating watches, leather goods, perfumes, sunglasses and much more). For this new chronograph, the brand put three years into developing its first in-house mechanical movement. The result is Caliber Werk 01.200, a self-winding movement equipped with a so-called flyback mechanism, a feature commonly used in chronograph movements to facilitate timings. Each time you want to start timing again it automatically returns the chronograph seconds hand to zero without the need for the wearer to hit restart.
A watch linked to a car usually refers in many ways to its big brother with four wheels. In this case that is no different. The energy for the automatic movement of the watch is generated by a beautiful optimized-energy rotor in the shape of the wheel rims of the limited edition Porsche. Watch lovers will be happy to read that the COSC-certified chronometer movement and rotor are visible through the sapphire case back. The movement further houses other high-tech materials, including tungsten steel.
From seat to wrist
The 42mm chronograph case is crafted of lightweight titanium with a black carbide coating that houses amongst others a carbon dial that recalls the carbon fiber strips of the 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series car. Additionally the same leather and yarn used for the seats of the car are used for the watch strap. The result is a beautiful watch that unfortunately only is available to future owners of the new Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series cars. Just 500 of the cars will be made, with a retail price tag starting at about 266,054 Euros (for Flemish part of Belgium). Accordingly, only 500 of the Porsche Design Chronograph 911 Turbo S Exclusive watches (costing 8361.34 Euros) will be made. Each watch can be fully personalized to coordinate with the design codes and colors of your new car. As standard, the Exclusive Series gets black, centre-locking 20 inch wheels with Golden Yellow Metallic highlights. The calipers of the carbon-ceramic brakes also come in black with gold Porsche logos.
Among the personalization options, Porsche Design offers six carbon dial colors in Porsche lacquer paint: (Golden Yellow Metallic, Carrera White Metallic, Agate Grey Metallic, Graphite Blue Metallic Guards Red and Black). Strap color choices are also customizable in these color settings.
Fastest 911 Turbo S ever
But what about the car itself? The new Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series is the most powerful – read: fastest – and most exclusive 911 Turbo S ever. The car’s twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre flat six engine has been boosted with a power kit to deliver 446 kW (607 bhp) – that is 27 horsepower more versus the standard 911 Turbo S, with the same maximum torque of 446 kW at 6,750 rpm, helping to trim the car’s 0-200 km/h time to 9.6sec, that is three-tenths faster than the regular model. Equipped with the Sport Chrono Package it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds. Top speed is set at 330 km/h.
The model sits on Porsche’s active sports chassis with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), and gets the Sport Chrono package as standard. These work with rear-axle steering and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), both of which are standard on all 911 Turbo S models.
The golden hour
Everything about this Porsche 911 Turbo S is conceived to let you live the golden hour at any moment of the day or year. The first thing that stands out when you see the car is the color ‘Gold yellow’ a specific color dedicated to this car only. The closer we get to the car and the more we look at it we notice how exclusive and individual the details are. Take for instance the carbon fiber stripes at the outside of the car, when we take a seat inside we notice that these stripes continue on the black headlining of the car through a form of perforation which reveals again that golden yellow color. How cool is that!
The car is incredible fast. And even though you are sitting in a car with a top speed of 330 km/h. it drives amazingly easy, even with high heels. You get airco and all the comfort you want and even though sensations are WOW!
The Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series is manufactured by hand at the new Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur in Zuffenhausen, a village in the north of Stuttgart where also Porsche’s headquarters are situated. Known previously as ‘Porsche Exclusive’ this place is specialized in made-to-measure. It is here that any order on demand from clients, as crazy as it may sound, is produced.
