The catwalk influences much more than our make-up, hair and clothing. Catwalk trends influence our total way of living from our interior to our car. Yes… our car!
As Maserati collaborated with Italian fashion brand Ermenegildo Zegno to have the interior of some of its cars trimmed, Japanse brand Mazda shows itself – again – a pioneer by introducing Ultrasuede® in its Mazda6 update. This suede texture fabric manufactured by Toray’s is inspired by the fashion industrie and used as automobile interior material for the very first time!

The latest update to the new Mazda6 Sedan and Wagon is the most comprehensive yet, offering enhanced quality in almost every detail of Mazda’s flagship model. It features a more mature, elegant and refined exterior design, and extensive interior revisions including completely new front and rear seating, premium quality trim and finish detailing throughout and, for models equipped with the MZD Connect multimedia system, the availability of Apple Car Play and Android Auto1. Eyecatchers definitely are the 360° view camera and the air ventilated seats, a real treat in tropic weather which we lately also enjoy in Belgium.
New technologies boost the performance of all SKYACTIV powertrains, and driving dynamics have been enhanced through increased body rigidity, steering and suspension system revisions, greater aerodynamic efficiency and reduced noise, vibration and harshness. That’s all about the driving for know, you’ll read more about it in another post. Today we focus on that special interior trim: Ultrasuede®.
Leader in advanced materials
Ultrasuede® is a hybrid nonwoven ultra-fine fiber fabric that combines the luster of grain leather and a smooth suede touch. Manufactured by the Japanese manufacturer Toray Industries – a leader in advanced materials – Mazda adopted the material for the instrument panel and door panels of the high-grade model (L Package) of the Mazda6.
Inspired by the masters
Inspired by the masters was the theme througout the whole Mazda6 presentation at the Spanish island Mallorca. A well chosen theme as master textile workers are able to deftly turn beautiful fabrics into true works of art. Each swash of color and intricate stitch is like a paint stroke that ultimately reveals a masterpiece. For instance, Japanese design philosophy of simplicity meeting beauty is fully realized even in something like a kimono. That same spirit is captured in the new Mazda6 Signature’s Ultrasuede® trim. With colors and accents inspired by the beauty of traditional kimonos, Ultrasuede® complements aesthetics, adding functionality to the equation.
Harmony of function and beauty
Ultrasuede® is comprised of interwoven, ultra-fine microfibers, creating an exceptionally soft and smooth texture that mirrors natural premium suede. It is fortified with polymers to extend its durability, as cars have to withstand the rigors of temperature, humidity and sunlight variations on a daily basis. Briefly, Ultrasuede® combines the functionality sought in automobile interior material such as color fastness and abrasion resistance and sensitivity such as fine and smooth suede texture and grain leather-like luster.
When the light falls on it, there’s just this little bit of play that forms a interesting element.
Ultrasuede® seems to constantly reinvent itself. In one moment, it’s a deep chestnut color—a sunken brown, reminiscent of the ancient beams found in Japanese temples. As the sun seeps through the interior, its unique sheen crosses over into a lustrous gilded bronze that evokes the ceremonial spirit of kimonos. To the touch, Ultrasuede® provides a feel like no other. Its soft, slightly fibrous surface complements the smooth polished feel of natural Japanese Sen wood. Lightly treated Nappa leather provides a tactile delight, awakening a sense of delight upon feeling its richness.
“What’s really beautiful is the surface contrast between Ultrasuede® trim and materials,” said Jo Stenuit, Senior Design Manager at Mazda’s European R&D Centre. “It’s also very tactile and great to touch.”
Through continuous technological advancements, Ultrasuede® has evolved as a highly functional material not only for fashion and interior designs, but also for automotive and aircraft interiors, sports gear and accessories for smartphones and mobile devices. Toray will continue to evolve Ultrasuede® towards a future full of ‘beautiful possibilities’.
