Makelab has teamed up with HERObike and the Design Department of the University of Kansas to make a skateboard that is both workable and eco-friendly, the Beacon Alley Skateboard. Makelab and HERObike have collaborated before on a bamboo bike so the step towards another recreative showstopper wasn’t a big one. “The skateboard uses the strength and vertical compliance of the plant, strengthened and stiffened in key areas with fiberglass and carbon fiber to make a deck that is fun, responsive, and visually appealing,” as stated on DesignBoom.
Do not be fooled however: this skateboard is not a designer gimmick. It’s a completely functional specimen that is able for tricks and cruising in style. Bamboo being the main construction element, the designers used the weaving bamboo structure as a visual eye-catcher on the top and bottom layer of the skateboard. www.designboom.com
