First of all, before you start making assumptions about this nifty thing, this is a ‘pétanque’ set, a national sport in France. Kinda like football, hockey or basketball in the United States. For those of you who never went to France or are not familiar with the concept: some guys gather around at a sandy, gravel like area and throw a little wooden ball (the French call this little wooden ball the ‘cochonnet’), in front of them. Following to that, the art is to throw the steel balls as close to the wooden ball as possible. Isn’t that exciting ? For the French (and beyond), it is. In fact, in France this sport is almost like national cultural heritage.
The French adore it, that’s why Paris based über luxury brand Hermès comes with a set of premium ‘pétanque’ balls in carbon steel and a little wooden ball (cochonnet) packed in a flexible leather case made out of fawn-coloured Hunter cowhide. Selling price: 1000 $ (That’s about 780 €). Well, if you know that a regular ‘Pétanque’ set costs about 20 $, you know that with this Hermès set you have the absolute Rolls Royce of ‘Pétanque’ balls, encrusted with the Hermès Paris logo.
